President's corner- Tommy Vinci [articles in pecking order]

GOT To Once again I want to remind the membership of some important things that are coming up in the very near future. One would be the nomination and election of officers for the coming year. The nominations are made at the October meeting and elections are at the November meeting. Please give this some thought!

Secondly, we have our annual "TOYS FOR TOTS" event, scheduled for November 21st. This is a very important event; it is our chance to insure that many more children have a happy Christmas morning! There will be raffles for prizes, food available for purchase, and some of our club members are working up a paint ball event for shooting at airplanes! [yes] Please make your best efforts to be there, you will enjoy and it is for a very worthy cause!

Thirdly, the Christmas dinner date has been changed from Saturday to Sunday December 6th! This event is catered and there is a cover charge, look for details elsewhere in the Flypaper!

Safety, Safety, Safety .............Always think S A F E T Y !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I better go. I am actually still in the priming stage, will the flaws never go away? [Give up hunting furry woodland creatures] I may fly by end of the year Mike! GOTTA GO!! [THEN the PT-19 RIGHT… TOMMY?]

MEETING MINUTES: SEPTEMBER 24, 1998 - by Dave Zeigler, Club Secretary

This was the last meeting of the year at Cathy Field, as the sun was already looming low on the horizon when President Tommy Vinci called the meeting to order at 7:30. A reminder was given that the Fall/Winter meetings will be held at the "old" Fayette High School (enter through the main Building "D" entrance and the room will be listed on the bulletin board). There were 19 members present.

OFFICER REPORTS:

President Tommy Vinci announced that officer nominations would be taken at the October meeting for 1999. The election is held at the November meeting. He mentioned that the Toys-For-Tots fun fly is coming up on Nov 21. This is one of the most fun gatherings of the year, and Paint ball Potshots at Passing Planes is definitely on! It sounds like Randy and Clare & Ernie are busily designing and building as many as four foam target drones (look a lot like Sr.Telemasters). You don't want to miss this one! All families are requested to bring some type of new toy valued at a minimum of $10 (or make a cash donation). On a more somber note, Tommy mentioned how important it is to be careful when driving around kids on 3 wheelers and motorcycles, as one of his son's friends was recently killed and another hurt in a head on collision with a car.

[hmmmmm night fly paintball….]

Vice-president Randy Hawkins suggested that everyone with an e-mail address will receive their FLYPAPER on line through our web site, saving about $600 a year (printing costs $.04 x 4 pages + a $.35 stamp). So please forward your e-mail address to Randy if he doesn't have it yet. He has added our club roster to the web page, however it is password protected. To find out the password, either call or e-mail Randy. He also gave a run down of the great time that he and Ernie Schlumberger had at the KRC electric fly in Pennsylvania. It sounded like they really wowed them with the brightest night flyer that they had ever seen! He said that they were flying as many as a dozen planes in the air at the same time much of the day, and didn't have any frequency problems. But the hottest craze in R/C seems to be the new Slow Flyers (electric powered planes that fly at walking speed, and can do touch and goes on a picnic table).

Secretary Dave Zeigler gave thanks to the Robinson Clan for their great support at the Kid's Freeflight Contest. The turn out was lighter than expected but those that showed had a good time, and there were some very good flights posted. He also mentioned that he was asked to do a free flight demonstration for a group of about 350 kids at the Cuboree, held at Camp Thunder Scout Camp near Woodbury, GA and then for the Pine Valley Girl Scout Council (about 250 girls) gathering a couple of weeks later.

Treasurer Roy Collins provided the Financial Report, showing the receipt of $70 dues and expenses of $85.50 (Bulldog Johnny) and $500 (bush hogging the field), leaving a total of all accounts at $8610.

Mike McGowan is once again organizing the Adopt-A-School Program to introduce 5th graders to aviation through modeling. He has done an exceptional job along with Andy Anderson and several other club members over the years to teach these kids at Peachtree Elementary School building techniques and to demonstrate how airplanes fly. Their first project this year will be to build and fly one of Dave's hand launched glider designs, the "Feather". Working with these kids is a satisfying experience and can have some really profound impact on their lives. Mike told the story where on one of his flights (he’s an airline pilot) that a business card was passed up to him it the cockpit. It was from a passenger that was one of the kids that he had inspired into aviation through the Explorer Scout Program about 21 years ago. [Mike THAT OLD?] After a brief discussion he found out that this group of four kids had kept in contact with one another over the years and had all become very successful in the aviation industry. If there is anyone interested in becoming an inspiration to these kids and helping with the monthly Adopt-A-School meetings, contact Mike or Andy.

OLD BUSINESS:

It seems that we are still experiencing a problem of some members not locking the gates behind them. Please, it is our responsibility for the last person to leave the field to

LOCK THE GATES. [and take your trash with you please]

BROKEN PROP AWARD:

Vijay Patel recently finished his new lightening fast SKAT electric powered pylon racer and was smart enough to enlist the aid of our resident electric go fast guru Gene Norman for the test flights. From all accounts it was a definite WOW to watch it streak across the sky! That is until something happened to the horizontal stab (or elevator) and caused Vijay to loose control. Well, at least it earned him the Broken Prop Award (though I suspect there was much more than a prop broken with a 140-MPH lawn dart. [Really a neat feat to fly it at all it'll fly again]

And then there was our amazingly quick learning new member Richie Wingo. He had really impressed us by soloing his first time out at any R/C field. Sure, he was deservedly proud of himself, and invited his parents to come out to witness his new flying skills. What is that they say about a little extra pressure that comes from doing it in front of an audience? It struck home with Richie full force shortly after takeoff when he over-rolled to inverted. Then everyone knows that you pull the stick back to gain some safe altitude, right? SMACK! Learning to repair model airplanes is an essential part of this sport! But at least he now has a cool Team Kamikaze patch to wear on his jacket.

VIJAY and HIS SKAT

Bits and Pieces by Ernie Schlumberger [good title Ernie]

No the title doesn’t refer to my latest trip to the field. This is just a collection of thoughts on my first anniversary of joining the Fayette Flyers. It’s amazing to look back and realize that one year ago this month I could barely keep an airplane in the air. [(Some would say this is still the case)] Now I find myself flying combat, electric powered sailplane competition, night flying and even teaching other beginners. I really appreciate all the help and guidance I’ve received over the year. I think trying all these different types of flying have really taught me a lot about the hobby. (And kept me extremely busy building to keep up with all the crashing!) Good thing the fall has arrived to give me more time to build up my fleet.

Now that it’s fall, our meetings will be held at the old High School. I look forward to all the show and tell that usually takes place before and after the meetings. (This behavior is extremely encouraged) It was about this time last year that the idea of a Website was being kicked around. Our current VP, Randy Hawkins made his idea a reality. It’s one of the best ones on the Web too! [ah shucks]

That’s a look at the past year, now on to an upcoming event. The Toys for Tots Fun Fly on Nov. 21st should be a lot of fun. Once again, our club is trying something new. We’ll have foam Sr. Telemaster size planes to shoot at with paint ball guns. There will be a small fee for the paint balls, [like a buck for 10 shots] and all proceeds will go to Toys for Tots. It’s got to be easier than trying to hit helium balloons like we tried on Combat Day! But, I’ll bring the helium balloons anyway and maybe we’ll have time to give that a try again. [Helium breathing?]

See you at the meeting on Thursday. REMEMBER to bring your latest project to show off!
