High-Starts and winches will be provided and the field will be closed to powered flight from 9 a.m. till 1:00p.m. The purpose is to expose those interested to the Joy of PURE Sailplane flying. ALL are welcome to watch or fly. This is a non-sanctioned event.
PRESIDENTS CORNER - Tommy Vinci
I have got in a lot of flying this past month, as many of you have. Personally, I am ready for a change in the season so it wont be quite so hot at the field. The thermometer at the shed was well over 100 degrees many days this month. Surely it is right around the corner, has to be; deer season is only a few weeks away.
Much to be discussed at the next meeting, please attend. We have to decide if we want to pave a runway, do we want to do some other surface, or do we want to do anything at all? You, the club membership, must decide![that was short for one so adept at jocular design]
The Prez
Meeting Minutes: July 29, 1999 by Ernie Schlumberger
Officer Reports: President, Tommy Vinci, brought the meeting to order at 7:30p.m. with 17 members and 5 member applicants in attendance. Tommy announced that Chuck and Earl Robinson went to compete in the NATS Sailplane Events and wished them Good Luck!
Vice President, Randy Hawkins, mentioned that our website has reached 5000 hits and the paper mailings are down to 41 per month. That translates to about $40/month in mailing/copying costs to supply the Flypaper by mail. Randy again asked if anyone has web access to read the Flypaper, so that we can cut down on club mailing costs.
Treasurer, Roy Collins, covered the financial statement for the month of July. We had receipts of $105.00 and $467.41 in expenses leaving a balance of our total assets at $7496.63. Roy also mentioned that as of July, we as a club have spent the 1999 projected income.
Old Business:
The subject of money renewed the discussion of returning the membership dues back to $70 a year. A Formal Motion was then made and seconded to raise the dues to $70/year. A further discussion had the originator modify that motion to raising the dues to $50/year like most other clubs in our area. [Barring special construction projects like the shed, annual expenses are estimated at $4500.00.] [These normal expenses can be viewed on Roy's spreadsheet updated each month and presented at the meeting.][The Club has been in a slow downward cash spiral since the dues were lowered from $70/year to $35/year, 2 years ago.] [The increase to $50. Would balance the sheet based on yearly projected membership and expected costs.]
Tommy then announced that we received formal approval of installing a paved runway with the stipulation that we must pay to have it removed when we leave. This led to a discussion of a possible membership cap if a runway is installed. No consensus was reached and that item was left as is.
Tommy asked for a show of hands for members that would like to have a paved runway 8 members raised their hands of 25 total people in attendance. Possible costs of installation and removal were discussed along with types of surfaces to be installed. Concrete, asphalt and sod runways were discussed. It was decided that the officers will have to get together and send out a questionnaire to all members due to the costs and obligations involved which may include an assessment to all members for the cost of the runway and removal. We were reminded that the total assets presently held by the Club were not enough to cover the cost of a hard surface runway.
New Business:
As of July, the AMA report received by the club shows 2 members that have not renewed their AMA membership for 1999. One of those members has requested to keep in Good Standing with our membership although he will not be flying this year. He stated that he would renew when he gets back into flying.
Several members have expressed concern over the number of small children allowed to wander up to the flying fence while members are flying. This is an unsafe condition and must not be allowed to continue.
A story was then told about the use of a new transmitter and not over night charging the nicads. New cells do not retain as long a charge until they have been deep cycled a couple of times.
Broken Prop Award:
None this month.[how'd that happen, I bought a bunch of CA.]
New Members:
This month we welcomed 5 new members to the club: Ken Andrews, Buddy and Matthew Hay, Dave Holec, Joey Scott, and
Jaye Tomlinson.
Joey and Stop sign

Meeting Minutes: August 26, 1999 by Ernie Schlumberger
Officer Reports:
Vice President, Randy Hawkins started the meeting at 7:40p.m. with 23 members and 3 member applicants in attendance. President, Tommy Vinci was celebrating his 22nd Wedding Anniversary and could not attend.[yes he did]
Randy explained that The Flypaper for July did not get sent out yet and announced the new schedule for delivery from now on. The Flypaper will now be sent out the week following the meetings so that the info will be more timely. The next edition will be a combined August/September edition and will include the runway survey that needs to be returned to the Secretary by mail or e-mail prior to the next meeting. The survey will allow the club to find out if a runway improvement project should be undertaken and to see whether a hard surface or sod runway is what the majority wants.
Treasurer, Roy Collins, went over the finances for the month of August. The Quarterly Audit was performed prior to the meeting with no problems found. We had receipts of $610.00, expenses of $321.19, which leaves the club with total assets worth $7785.44.
Secretary, Ernie Schlumberger, announced that the vote on last months motion to raise next years dues to $50.00 would be postponed until the next meeting due to The Flypaper not being sent out this month.
New Business: An executive decision was made to have the lower field cut for the upcoming Pure Sailplane Day on Saturday, September 4th. No objections were made to having it cut. Tom Whitehead gave an update on the status of his project to put together a training program for our instructors. He researched other clubs and printed material, and found an excellent book titled "Basic Flight Training" which costs about $9-10 at bookstores. This book has a set of guidelines that the instructor can follow to teach their student pilots. He also found some good checklists to use to determine when the student is ready to have the cord cut and allow them to fly on their own. An idea was also expressed which would have all new members pass an efficiency test to make sure they are capable of flying on their own. Several members said they favored that idea. Randy Hawkins discussed his "Mentor Program" idea which would assign new members to an instructor and the instructor would work exclusively with that student pilot until they passed their efficiency test and were "signed off" to fly on their own.
New Members:
This month the club welcomed 3 new members: Matt Lott, John Martin and Mark Barnes.
Broken Prop:
Ernie Schlumberger was awarded a S.A.D. Patch for the demise of his "Dazzler". On a hazy, glare-filled morning, he got his plane inverted and pulled instead of pushing. He never knew the airplane was inverted.
The Fall Fun Fly/Cookout has been rescheduled for Saturday October 2nd instead of Sunday the 3rd. The club will provide the grilled items and drinks.
Please bring a covered dish or desert along with the serving utensils for your dish. Grill starts at 2p.m. And Flying All Day!
Ya never know - By Randy Hawkins
So I had to write about something here and give you something to eat up your precious time. I have an old KAOS, actually my first greaser RC model. Fly's Great, smooth and solid, a definite recommend to those moving out of trainers. It had a 46 in it and I wanted to pep it up a bit so I bought a new MDS .58 from the Hobby Stop and threw it in. Went out to the field and got the thing up and running. I was using 10% Cool Power Pink and The motor behaved well and IT was a NEW beginning for a tired old plane. I broke the motor in on the wing, yeah not recommended but I'm lazy and impatient. Ran it richer than Old Doc Richardson for 4 tanks full and then tuned it in. Motor was sweet. I bought some 15% Cool power pink wanting the pep of the nitro add some extra zip. BUT it was not to get flown because of this or that, but I kept dragging it out to the field with me for the last month. Last Sunday I finally set aside time for it to get some air and Had a Heck of a time getting it to run. In fact all the Motor Gurus at the field gave it their best shot and left scratchin their heads [normal for Tommy he was out in the woods]. It would IDLE just fine, start with a simple backspin but when I would go to full power it would rev up and start barking and bucking and quit very abruptly. We tried everything anyone could think of. I gave up after an hour and brought it home. Today Monday I spent 2 hours taking the motor apart, checking, cleaning looking smelling, and pleading for an answer. Always the same, idle smooth, easy start, but at top end run an immediate stop at full power. NO not too lean, No not gunked up, nor too rich, nor a bad plug, nor a dirty needle valve, nor a clogged vent line, nor a weak wrist, nor nothing wrong to anything I did, except use the 15% fuel instead of the 10%. AHHH you say, just a bad batch of fuel, but alas no, the same 15% ran MY Magnum .53 in the Global P-47 Just fine yesterday. At the Field I had even drained the tank and used some of Ernie's 15% and got the same results with the motor [thats why I figured the motor had a mechanical not the fuel.] Today after doing everything else and almost doing like Tom Huckaby recommended and Jump up and down on it. I remembered the 10% I bought long time back. I drained the 15% out, filled the tank and purged it. The darn thing started with a purr and went right to full power and never skipped a beat. NOW you Motor Gurus explain it to me, but I guess it's happy now as it should be. This one just enjoys it's own choice of beverage, Don't you like a long story with a happy ending. -Randy
Tom Huckaby and an Electric, quite nice flying Aero Commander.
