NO MEETING DECEMBER - MERRY CHRISTMAS and Hap Hap Happy New Year FROM THE TEAM!

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

I want to thank all of the club members and their families who came to our Christmas dinner. I had a great time and I am sure all of you did as well. Ernie and Clare Schlumberger get a great big thank you for doing most of the leg work in arranging the meal (Randy and I were conveniently tied up with other commitments), and also to all of you who helped us set up and clean up after the dinner was over. Thanks also go to Mike McGowan who read “his version” of the Night Before Christmas with all of the little ones there surrounding him. I am already looking forward to our next year as a club and all of the events we will enjoy together.

I have been very impressed and very thankful to see that several of our club members are taking on responsibilities for the coming year. This is refreshing to see and will be of great help not only to the officers but to the club as well. We now have a central point of contact for new members and beginning flyers, we have club members who will take on the task of controlling the fire ants, and the weeds along the runway and under our safety fence. Trash anyone?

Speaking of trash … I just came from the field and someone is evidently trying to keep quiet about their mishap, actually there are at least two someone’s. Tom Huckaby, Charles Perkins and myself picked up a lot of leftover debris just across the runway and then Charles and I picked up some more “remnants” at the ditch while looking for some of Mike’s missing parts. Come on guy’s and gal’s, pick up all of the parts and pieces, not just the big ones!

See you at the field! Tommy

From the VP - Tom Huckaby

The PROPOSED By Laws and Field Rules were posted on the web site for review by the membership in early December. These proposals are based on courtesy, consideration of fellow members and common sense. The main intention of these proposals is to more clearly define our present documents as well as to put in writing some practices we now partially observe but are not actually specified in either. These two documents contain only three rather generic safety rules. The PROPOSED Club Safety Rules document is a separate and distinct issue from the By laws and the Field Rules. As you know the membership will discuss the By laws and Field Rules in the regular January meeting and vote on them in the February meeting. If you would like to compare our present documents to the proposals you can print a copy of the present and proposed by laws off the web site and compare them to each other. They can be found under the membership section of the web page. The present Field Rules are posted on the north side of the storage shed at the field.

On a lighter note, Our club must be doing SOMETHING RIGHT!! We will end this year with the largest membership in the history of the club, we had the largest ever attendance at the annual Christmas Dinner. We had the greatest number of spectators at a club sponsored event at this year’s Fall Fun Fly. We raised more money than ever from a club project. We had some spectacular work days as we made improvements to the site. We had a lot of fun and good eats at our club events, and some how with all that we managed to get in a lot of GOOD flying . And a little not so good . I think we may have set a record for mid-airs also. [kool video at the Xmas dinner.]

Anyway, The Fayette Flyers had a pretty good year, and I feel it was due to our working together as a club and, helping each other as individuals. We will begin a new year in just a few days. If we keep the Spirit we had in 2001, 2002 can be even better!.... Huck

Meeting Minutes of November 29, 2001 by Ernie Schlumberger

The meeting got started at 7:30p.m. in classroom D16 with 26 members and 3 membership applicants in attendance.

Officer Reports:

Treasurer, Dave Zeigler, presented Tom Huckaby with a check for $1900 made out to the WinShape Homes - $1853.00 came from income from the Charity Fun Fly. Tom will deliver the check to Truett Cathy on Sunday, December 2nd. Dave then went over the treasurer report for the month of November. The Club had $3490 in receipts from the membership dues and $2653.33 in expenses from Fun Fly expenses, field maintenance, Porta Potty, Postage/mailing and the $1900 for Winshape Homes.

Secretary, Ernie Schlumberger had nothing to report this month.

President, Tommy Vinci, thanked Tom Huckaby for all the work he did to make the Charity Fun Fly a Big Success.

Vice President, Tom Huckaby reported that BFI had not been doing too good of a job with our Porta Potty and charging $135/month to service it. We switched to M&B’s Porta Potty service for $76/month.

Tommy reminded everyone about the Christmas Dinner on Sunday, December 9th at the Gathering Place.

Old Business:

Last month’s item for creating a New Members/Training Coordinator was brought to a vote and passed unanimously. This will be an appointed position and Dues Free. David Keller was appointed and accepted the position.

Tom Huckaby gave a copy of the proposed revision to the bylaws and field rules to all present and gave an overview of the revisions. (They are also posted on the Website).

Earl Robinson went over the Proposed Safety Rules for all types of Airplanes. A copy was given to the Secretary to add the Minutes. All of the proposals are to be discussed at the January meeting before they are voted on to be adopted. Once again, these are only proposals.

Proposals:

Rules for all Fixed Wing Power Aircraft

All takeoffs, landings, as well as all other flying shall be done while the pilot is at one of the six designated pilot stations.

The runway shall be used for takeoffs and landings only. It shall not be used as an over fly area.

A. There shall be no low passes or other maneuvers over the runway.

B. The flight pattern shall be determined based on wind direction at the beginning of each flight

session.

C. The race track pattern shall be observed to keep all air traffic moving in the same direction.

Maneuvers and practice should be done at the extremes of the field out of the landing or takeoff areas.

Pilots or spotters must announce in a loud voice their intention to land or takeoff.

Landing aircraft have the right of way over taxiing aircraft or aircraft preparing to takeoff. Dead stick aircraft have priority over all other aircraft.

No Pilot may land or takeoff while any person is on the runway side of the safety barrier. Any person who crossed the safety barrier to retrieve a dead stick model or for any other reason must announce in a loud voice, "On the Runway". Once that person returns to the pilot side of the safety barrier they must announce in a loud voice, "Clear".

When two or more planes are flying it is mandatory that each pilot have a spotter by his or her side. The duty of a spotter is to warn the pilot of any apparent danger.

A student pilot does not qualify as a spotter.

A timer does qualify as a spotter.

There shall be no flying while the field is being mowed on the runway side of the safety barrier.

Planes belonging to guest or novice shall have a safety inspection prior to the first flight.

Any aircraft too heavy or too large to be carried to the flight line may be taxied to the flight line only if restrained by the pilot or his spotter. All other aircraft shall be carried to the flight line. No aircraft shall be taxied from the flight line back into the pit area.

Fixed wing aircraft shall not be flown in airspace designated for helicopters.

These rules may be altered for special events such as fun flys, contests or charity events. In this case, it is the responsibility of the event director to establish safety guidelines for the event.

Safety Rules for Gliders requiring a High start or Winch

Gliders requiring a high start or winch must be flown from the upper field.

No pilot shall launch his or her glider when anyone is up wind of the launch area.

Gliders shall not be flown in airspace designated for helicopters.

Safety Rules for Helicopters

Helicopters must be flown from the designated helicopter area.

Helicopters shall not be flown in designated fixed wing airspace.

New Business:

Tom Huckaby proposed delivering poinsettias to all of the homeowners on Thompson Road for Christmas. He said it would cost less than $100. It was agreed that it would be a nice idea to do. Jim Beck volunteered to help make the cards that would be attached.

Randy Hawkins proposed putting a cap on membership and a lot of discussion followed but it was tabled until the next meeting.

Earl Robinson asked how the club calendar was made each year. The Club officers meet each year in January to discuss the calendar and then post it on the website. Tommy Vinci stressed that any member that would like to sponsor an event, contact the officers to see about putting it on the calendar.

Tip of the Month:

Jim Beck gave a lesson on soldering. He said to stay away from lead free solder because it’s too brittle. Also, pure silver solder is too brittle. He recommended using 60/40 solder in small diameter because it provides a constant feed of flux as you feed solder into the joint. Jim uses 63/37 "Kester 44" brand solder and he offered to supply club members with ¼ lb. to 1 lb. rolls at a good price through his company. He also recommends Kester 659 flux that he also stocks.

New Members:

This month we had 3 new members join our club. Please welcome Brendan Galvin, Bruce Thoman and Ric Vaughn to our club.

Broken Prop:

Stan McCullough nominated Steve Brownlee (who was flying Jimmy Bryant’s airplane) and Randy Hawkins for a spectacular midair collision over the center of the field. Tommy awarded them the award.
