February 1999

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

This coming Saturday (27th) is our first event for the year. It is an all electric, anything goes, event for all club members and visitors. Even if you do not currently own an electric airplane you will find the event fun to watch, and will probably find yourself wanting to fly them in the future. I look forward to seeing you there.

The yearly "swap shop" at Perry, GA. is also close upon us. It has been expanded this year to include two buildings instead of one (and they really needed the additional room!) so should be even better. If you have the time, you really ought to try to make this. It is a good opportunity to pick up some good deals and also to unload some if your wanting too! It is located on the fairgrounds just off I-75; very easy to get to and there is a WAFFLE HOUSE located right there!

Another big happening (early April) is the annual trade show in Toledo, OH. I know this is a stretch for some of you to make, but, if you do, you won’t believe everything there is to see there, and your efforts will all be worth it. This is the first show of the year where all of the manufactures showcase their new products and a swap shop that has no equal. This show has something for every aspect of the model industry, from boats and airplanes to tanks and helicopters.

Remember, think Safety, Safety, Safety .............Always think S A F E T Y !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(SPITFIRE ........... where the heck is that thing anyway?)[PT-19 is looking good though]

VP notes- Randy Hawkins

If you're in the magazines a lot looking at the new gizmos and models coming out, you'll find a slew of new things that are meant to make this a more enjoyable hobby. Great Planes and Hobbico have been coming up with new items almost every month. A new CA hinge slot cutter Bill Divens reports as working very nice. Gene Norman has finally accepted the fate of being a Hybrid - Electric/Greaser pilot by buying a very nice low wing Arf that fly's like a Kaos. I just got a new B-2 bomber "Park Flyer" electric from Global that so far fly's Great. The servos I put in it weigh in at .19 oz each yet produce 11 oz of torque. Tom Huckaby has a new electric sailplane arf that comes built to 99%, motor and servos are even pre-installed and report is it fly's great. Ernie just got his first computer radio, a very nice Hitec Flash 5. Craig Merchant informs me his new Magnum 20 runs very smooth and he is impressed with the bang for the buck and ball bearings too! The Hobby Stop is full of new up to date equipment and models. This wasn't meant to be an add for them but it's nice to see that Rodney and the 2 Bills are being very progressive with their in store stock. In most cases now their prices meet or beat the mail order competition. Again it's nice to have a local hobby shop, especially on a Saturday afternoon at about 5pm when Sunday is Going to be a Perfect day and that last thingamabob you need won't arrive by mail till Monday at the earliest. Or your expecting it to Rain all night and day and it sure would be fun to barricade yourself in your shop with a new kit. There is a lot of stuff out there GET busy Build something.

Meeting Minutes: January 28,1999  By Ernie Schlumberger, Club Secretary

Officer Reports:

The meeting began with President Tommy Vinci welcoming a standing room only crowd (roughly 45 members) to the first meeting of 1999. Treasurer Roy Collins then went over the financial report. To show our support for the charities of our field’s owner, Truett Cathy, the club has once again voted to support the Chick-fil-A sponsored LPGA Tournament this year with the purchase of the Silver ticket package, which costs $550. If you are interested in seeing the LPGA event, contact Roy for details. The club is also looking into buying another CD in the amount of $2500 for future club use.

Dave Zeigler, Youth Director, discussed the upcoming Perry Southeastern Model Show on March 6,1999. Dave will be setting up a kids area where they will be able to buy, learn about and build some of his own designed planes. He flew some excellent examples of rubber band powered planes in the room. Dave also talked about the upcoming Science Olympiad, where over 2000 schools compete. One of the schools that he worked with holds the national record with a 2 min. 38 second flight and will be one of the favorites to win this year’s event.

Vice President, Randy Hawkins, went over the 1999 Events calendar. The club officers tried to schedule the events so they would not conflict with other clubs’ events. Most restricted flying type events are scheduled for Saturdays to allow open flying on Sundays. Added events include a Snowbird Electric Fun Fly, a Spring Night Fun Fly, and a Fall Pure Sailplane Fun Fly. The Fall Kids Fling was deleted. Randy mentioned that the Spring Fun Fly would also include a swap shop this year.

New Business:

Tommy Vinci talked about the savings to the club since the Flypaper has been put on line. (Note: Currently there are 105 Paid members for 1999 and only 58 still receive the Flypaper by mail) This translates into about a $600 annual savings. It was also brought up that the drainpipe running across the field’s entry road is broken. It was decided and approved that Charles Perkins would take care of the repairs. We also agreed to setting up a spring field maintenance day, no date was specified.

New Members:

This month we welcomed 8 new members: Wallace Riley, Dave Brown, Jeremy Bristol, Robert Hughie and his twin sons Josh and Jason, Kevin Burgess and Chris Rondeau. Please give them your support and guidance to help them when needed. Trainers, please make yourselves available to these and other members in "training".

Show and tell:

Gene Norman brought his "gooslinger" 40-size Extra 300 with excellent detail and Monokote covering. (Almost too nice to get dirty by flying it) Earl and Chuck Robinson brought their foam cutting bow and some examples of wings that they cut. Dave Zeigler had a whole box of goodies with examples of his planes that he will be taking to Perry.

Broken Prop Award:

It hardly seems fair, but I guess I have to tell you who won this month. Club Secretary Ernie Schlumberger and his wife Clare (RC flyer in training) won the Team Kamikaze for stress testing their 60-size foam Telemaster. [The paint ball proof of concept plane] The pilots (on buddy cord) did fine under stress, but unfortunately the wing couldn’t take it. It wasn’t bad enough that the wing folded, but the plane landed in the woods and in the middle of the only 5ft tall brier patch within 100 yards.

More Club Business:

Then a discussion ensued about AMA and club renewal. Several members expressed concern over ensuring that all members have renewed their AMA membership to protect the club in the event of an accident with an uninsured member. Two motions were brought up and seconded and passed as official motions to be voted on at the next meeting. [THIS THURSDAY] The first motion was to change the renewal date to December 31st of each year. The second one proposed a $10 late fee for not renewing before that date.

After reviewing the By-laws, it was realized that the renewal date is already set as December 31st of each year. This motion will not have to be voted on. Also some members discussed ideas about setting a $35 "re-initiating" fee for members that wait an extended amount of time before renewing. No consensus could be reached and it was not made into a formal motion. This will likely be discussed at the next meeting when the vote is taken on the $10 late fee. Meeting adjourned.

Officer's Note: READ THIS CAREFULLY PLEASE!

Things to watch for in the coming months:

This coming weekend on Saturday February 27, we will have the first event of the year, the Snowbird Electric Fun Fly. Come on out to see members fly everything and anything that is electric powered from 10am-4pm. The field will be closed to all other flying during those hours. Next month, on Saturday March 20, we will have a non-powered Sailplane Fun Fly. The club will have Hi-Starts and winches available to launch the glider of your choice from 9am-1pm.

Club member Joe Elder is putting the finishing touches on a twin Telemaster. It is powered by two OS 35’s, has a drag chute, multiple bomb drop and candy drop capabilities. Members looking for info about the Top Gun event that is coming up in April may be able to get some stories from Mike Beguelin after he returns from the event.
