PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Well, it seems that I have finally gotten all of my projects out of the way that had been on hold since "Bambi" season started last September and the wife is off my case. Now it’s time to get back on building projects that have been on hold and get back to some flying. Now if Mother Nature would just cooperate.
When you read this we will either have had another great turn out for our scheduled work day this coming Saturday or we will be telling why we didn’t get any more done than we had planned to accomplish. I’m hoping we have a good turn out. Did we mention that food and drinks were provided? Steaks were great in case you didn’t make it, great job on the grill Ernie!
Our upcoming meeting probably promises to be a long one as we have safety items to discuss. I have come to realize that the larger the group, the less likely of a chance of making everyone happy. All we can ask is that we realize that we can come to an agreement for most, but not everyone will agree with them. I guess the real question is can you abide by them.
Tommy Vinci - Club President
VP- Tom Huckaby
On Dec. 7,2001, John, the middle school student I mentor, and I delivered a
potted Christmas flower to each of our neighbors on Thompson Road. I
expected to get some comments about noise. I got only one and it was rather
mild. One neighbor thought we were selling the flowers and offered to pay
for it! Three or four folks did not know of us at all.
Two of these said they
would visit our field with children or grandchildren. The Three comments I
got which were unexpected had to do with added traffic and the speed of some
of the added traffic. It is about .55 miles from Highway 74 to our gate. If
we drive this at 25 mph. instead of 35 mph. we will loose 12 SECONDS.
Thank you, [Suppose to be Cub Yellow,,, yeah live with it Tom.]
Tom
Meeting Minutes for January 31, 2002 by Ernie Schlumberger
Vice President, Tom Huckaby, brought the meeting to order at 7:30p.m. with 35 members, 7 member applicants and 5 guests in attendance. Tom was filling in for President, Tommy Vinci.
Officer Reports:
Treasurer, Dave Zeigler, went over the financial report for December 2001 and January 2002. Dave highlighted the cost savings from switching to the new Porta Potty company, which went from $136.37/month to $76.00/month. The club had receipts of $3276 from 2002 renewal and Christmas Party. The expenses were $1014.39 from Christmas Party, Porta Potty, 2002 Box rental, Postage and Mailing supplies and miscellaneous expenses. This leaves a total of all accounts of $11,229.33.
The miscellaneous expenses covered the Poinsettias that were given to all homeowners on Thompson Road at Christmas time. Thanks went out to Tom Huckaby for delivering them and Mary and Jim Beck for designing and placing cards and ribbons on them.
The homeowners were appreciative, and a couple of them mentioned that they wished the traffic on their road would slow down to the speed limit. Please observe the 30mph speed limit while on Thompson Road so we can be better neighbors!!
Secretary, Ernie Schlumberger reported that 140 members renewed from 2001 and we had 7 new members applying at this meeting which bring us to 147 members that are 2002 members.
Newsletter Editor/Webmaster, Randy Hawkins, announced that we are now the owners of the "fayetteflyers.com" URL. The new website is operating with a link to the current site so that we can now get to our site just by typing in fayetteflyers.com The new site has 100 megs of space with good bandwidth and speed. It will cost $14.95/month and will have the ability to handle video clips and bulletin board features.
Vice President, Tom Huckaby, discussed the 2002 Calendar of Events, which will be posted on our site. The Calendar includes 2 Club workdays on Feb. 23 and March 9th, King Peach Electric Sailplane Contest in May, also a new regional sized Electric Fun Fly to be known as SEFF - Southeast Electric Flight Festival in June, and the moving of the WinShape Charity Fun Fly from October to August 24th for better weather.
Jeff Myers then got up and explained the new SEFF event. He said 12 members showed up for the planning meeting and a Logo has been designed along with a website, dedicated to the event, which is up and running. There is a link on our club website to get there now. Jeff said Hobby Lobby has agreed to be our Primary sponsor and they will be at the event to sell their merchandise. They already donated $1000 worth of kits to raffle off. They will put the SEFF logo on their webpage, which gets over 4000 hits per day. They will also debut some new planes at our event, which is sure to draw some magazine coverage. So far, Radical RC, Hobby Hangar, Gary Wright Model Products have said they would come to our event and Aveox has expressed an interest in being there also.
Jeff then asked the Club for a vote on approving $772 for advertising which includes 1 - a full-page ad in S & E Modeler (They, in return, will place an ad in Model Aviation free of charge) and 2 - a 6 month banner ad on http://www.ezonemag.com/
Old Business:
Tom Huckaby then explained that the AMA has issued a new rule that all existing clubs must submit their Bylaws along with their 2003 Charter renewal. Tom then asked the members if they would like to go over the By-law and Field Rule Proposals or wait to have them reviewed to meet the new guidelines for 2003. The members agreed to go over what we have proposed and then look at the new guidelines later. Tom then went over the Bylaws and Field rules line by line with some proposals to change verbiage applied to the proposals which will be attached. This took almost an hour and ended with a motion to postpone the Safety Rules until the next meeting. The Finalized Proposals will be voted on at the next meeting and if passed will be adopted.
New Business:
The Southeastern Model Show in Perry, Ga. on March 3rd will again host Dave Zeigler and the Kid’s area for building Free flight models and flying them. Dave asked for volunteers to help him. Please contact Dave if you’re interested.
During the Bylaws discussion, Tom Huckaby mentioned that our club had an open position for Public Affairs Committee Chairman. He said it was an appointed position but asked for a volunteer or nomination. Randy Hawkins nominated Steve Trofemuk [guy with the funny name] and he accepted. The nomination was seconded and put to a vote. It passed. Please welcome Steve as our club’s Public Affairs committee chairman.
Broken Prop Award:
This month we had two nominees: Andy Willets for crashing his newly acquired "Shockwave" [clik here to see what it use to look like]while attempting to check out the slow flight characteristics and got it into an uncontrollable stall, and John Benario for crashing a helicopter. It was put to a vote and Andy Willets was awarded a "Crasher Patch". Jeff Meyers will deliver it.
New Members:
This month we had 7 new members join our club. Please welcome Ken Mote, Steve Kubit, David Hood, William Cannady (Scott’s father), Larry Redmond, Bob Godwin and Bill Voss to the Fayette Flyers.
New Membership and Training - Coordinator David Keller
The constant influx of new members in a club with over 170 personnel, combined with the need to assist these new members with learning to safely fly model aircraft had placed a severe strain on the duties of the Club Secretary. As a result, at last November's club meeting, a new position was created to assist with new membership and the training of members new to RC modeling.
Contact Information
Therefore, if you are new to Fayette Flyers and need an instructor, or are new to the area and would like to join the club, than please contact David Keller at 770-502-9455 or via email at dkeller@mail3.newnanutilities.org. I will be handling the applications for new members, and I will try to take a more proactive role on behalf of the club in coordinating training. This will include providing a list of volunteer instructors, linking up new students with the appropriate instructor, tracking their progress, providing a flight check for new members who are already proficient, and just about anything else involving bringing in new members and insuring they can safely fly their aircraft.
Appeal for Flight Instructors
Currently we have what appears to be a robust list of instructors; however, this is not truly the case. Many of our volunteers are already club officers with many other duties. Several instructors at any given time are temporarily unavailable and many are specific to glider or electrics only. Simply put, with a club our size we need at least 20 personnel on our roster from which we can obtain enough personnel at any given time to link up with a student on a weekly basis. If you are interested please contact me to volunteer. Please don't worry about equipment as a stumbling block. I have obtained several Futaba buddy boxes and a training cord for Futaba, JR, and Hitec systems. We also have training books to assist with the ground school side of things.
For those of you interested I would point out that simply knowing how to fly a model doesn't necessarily mean you would make a good instructor pilot. Here are some basic guidelines that I feel are critical.
Appeal for Building Instructors
Another area sometimes overlooked is with the construction of model aircraft. With the advent of an ever increasing array of excellent ARFs, many members new to the hobby can become quite proficient at flying, yet not actually have developed any skill at building and repairing their own aircraft.
While it is now possible to find a wide variety of beginner to advanced skill level ARFs, when someone does decide to build it is easy to select an aircraft they may be capable of flying, but are not yet capable of building.
Most trainer aircraft are also designed to be easy to build with excellent documentation. Most warbirds, scale aircraft and other advanced aircraft are not, and poor construction usually guarantees a poor flying aircraft.
Consequently, it seems logical that we also develop a list of club members who enjoy building their own aircraft and would be willing to take a new builder under their wing to provide advice and expertise. If you fall into this category of modeler than please contact me so that I may develop a similar list of volunteers.
Thanks for your assistance.
