President’s Column

We have a problem and it is up to you, not just your officers or any one individual to solve. The problem is that all of a sudden we have an influx of people who are under the impression that they can enjoy the hard work of all of our membership, all of the money that you have paid in dues each year to improve our field and facilities … all of this without joining our club, paying dues, helping with our work days etc. They are evidently under the impression that they can just show up and fly. Sorry, but it ain’t gonna happen! We have a responsibility to check the frequency board and verify that each person is a member of this club, that they have a club membership sticker attached, and that they are covered by our insurance through the AMA. All it will take is one freeloader to mess up a lot of years hard work by many of us.

Hopefully by this meeting I will have installed a sign over the frequency board that states; "You must be a member of the Fayette Flyers to fly at this field. Membership information can be found at fayetteflyers.com or by asking any club member." Again, it is up to all of us to protect what we have worked so hard to build.

Field Use, Field Rules and TOO MANY Airplanes?

This past weekend the weather surprised everyone and we had excellent flying conditions on Sunday. The field was hopping and there were a lot of planes in the air. Unfortunately, not all of those airplanes were being flown by members. There were at least four AMA cards on the frequency board that were missing the 2003 Fayette Flyers membership sticker.

I don't even want to begin to explore the host of integrity issues that come to mind regarding people who would use something for which they have not paid, there's a bigger problem that affects us all. Our permission from John Wieland to continue using the field was granted based on our assurance as a club and my personal promise that the only people flying at the field would be members of the Fayette Flyers or their guests in accordance with the bylaws. I am certainly not interested in spending the limited amount of free time I have trying to police grown men who ought to know better, but if I see a card on the board without a 2003 sticker I'm going to be inquiring about the owner's membership status. I would really appreciate not being placed in that position.

Field rules seem to be one of the most frequent topics of conversation anytime I'm out for a day of flying. Aerobatics over the runway, flying against the pattern, pilots failing to announce their intentions and park flyers/helicopters blocking the runway are mentioned most often. It is everyone's responsibility to correct and help any individual who is having trouble complying with the the rules.

I hope that everyone has been taking advantage of all this chilly airplane-building weather that we've been having. While I've been trying to do my part, there have been a number of suggestions by my better half that I am approaching having too many airplanes. I will usually hasten to point out the VAST numbers that make up the fleets of some of my fellow club members when this topic comes up. I will rely on everyone to assure her, should she ask, that it is perfectly normal to have a quarter scale aircraft occupy the dining room table for extended periods of time and that none of you have parked in your garages for years either. In the meantime, I'll continue to try to avoid being sent out to sleep with the airplanes until the weather warms up a little more. Now, if I could just sell the lawnmower, not only would I have more airplane money and more garage (hangar) space, but I'd also have more free time for flying... Paul
