PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Maybe we ought to give boats a serious look with all the rain we have been getting lately, or maybe equip our aircraft with floats! On second thought, forget the floats. I witnessed an experienced pilot flying a "Soarstar" have all sorts of trouble with that scenario. I witnessed the aircraft flipped upside down (the pilot was able to "push" it to shore with the prop wash!), I saw the airplane "bounce off the bank" (nose first) several times! I witnessed each and every "cringe of emotion" from Clare Schlumberger as she watched these things happen to "her" airplane which she had so "regrettably" let others fly! If you want more details on how not to fly off of water, I suggest you contact Mike McGowan![NOT] He pretty much knows what you should not do, and I suggest someone other than Clare to borrow a plane from. I think she learned her lesson![LOLOL]

This coming month will be our club cookout and fun fly. The date is Sunday, July 15th. The club is providing everything but the appetite. Please try and attend and bring your families along, as this is what the whole thing is all about! More details coming concerning the "road kill" that will be served.

Hey, the sun is out …I got to go and fly!

Your Prez!

I was asked to leave this out buy the supplier but It needs to be said again so live with it. It's good.[I like it]

A friendly reminder: When we invite a guest to fly at OUR Field,[Like where we spend GREAT times] you and I as Hosts have the responsibility to confirm that our guest has a CURRENT AMA membership card . We also need to acquaint our guest with the Club Rules posted on the shed and explain the flight pattern as well as the no fly zones and Frequency BOARD! Another point we need to remember is that the by laws state "Visiting flyers to the club may visit four (4) times before being asked to join [or take a hike my comments]. Any exception will be made at the discretion of the Executive Council."

Meeting Minutes for May 31, 2001 by Ernie Schlumberger

The meeting came to order at 7:35 p.m. with 19 members and 3 member applicants in attendance.

Officer Reports:

Tommy Vinci read the Treasurer Report for Dave Zeigler who couldn’t be there. This month the club had $405 in receipts from dues and $208.34 in expenses from field maintenance and corporate renewal.

Next, the results from the Science Olympiad National Finals were read. The Nationals were held in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the U.S. Air Force Academy. For the "Wright Stuff" category, Dave’s Kids did as follows: 1st place (Gold Medal) – High School: McIntosh – 3min. 25 sec (Andrew Hennebry and David Condon). School took 6th place overall – their highest finish ever. 2nd Place (Silver Medal) – Middle school: Booth 3:32.5 (Steven Perry and Andrew Wedemeyer). School Won the National Championship Overall – for the 6th year in a row! 3rd Place (Bronze Medal) – Middle School: Rising Starr 3:32.2 (Danny O’Shaugnessey and Nate Overall). School finished 13th overall in the Nation.[remember the youth they are the future]

Vice President, Tom Huckaby talked about the Fayette County Mentoring Program and said to contact him for the Info on How to Sign up for Next Year.

Secretary, Ernie Schlumberger reported that there are currently 153 members in our club.

Contest Director, Mike McGowan then talked about this year’s Electric Sailplane King Peach Championship. He said it was the most successful Sailplane event that we’ve ever had. We had competitors come from as far away as New Orleans, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Florida, and from one of our North Atlanta clubs, Ric Vaughn, took the Crystal Eagle to become the Tournament Champion. All the flyers had a great time and said they will be back next year. We plan to have a 3-day event next year also, since this one worked out so well.

President, Tommy Vinci congratulated and thanked Web Master/Newsletter Editor, Randy Hawkins on 3 full years of providing The Fly Paper online (first issue May 1998) and maintaining the website which has had over 14,500 hits!

Tip Of The Month:

This month, Mike McGowan provided a tip about model CG and trimming. A too far forward CG is just as bad as a too far aft CG. Get the airplane up at altitude and trim for level hands off flight. Next, push the nose down into about a 45-degree dive and let go. If the aircraft balloons back up, then the CG is too far forward. If the aircraft starts to tuck and speed up in the dive, then the CG is too far aft. The best case is if the model slowly recovers level flight.

Also, since most mishaps happen during landings while flying slow, get the aircraft up to altitude and practice slow flying to get a feel for the slow flight abilities of the model. Practice stalls to see if the aircraft falls straight ahead or off to one wing. This will show if you have a heavy wing.

Old Business:

Field owner meeting has occurred, and the "owner is not interested in selling the property or securing a lease on the land."

The New Frequency pins are installed and look great! Thanks to Tom Huckaby for taking care of that.

New Business:

Phil Meyers mentioned that it might be a good idea to rent a steamroller again for the runway to take care of a couple of wrinkles. Everyone said it sounded like a good idea and it will be done soon.

Contact Dave Zeigler if you’re interested in helping out with THE KID’S SUMMER FLING (contest) on Saturday, June 23rd. Don’t forget about the workshops at Dave’s house on the 3 Tuesdays prior to the event. (And you can check out the website for all pertinent info concerning the event.)

New Members:

This month 3 new members joined our club. Please welcome Keith Mansfield, Bobby Fincher and Danny Graddy to the Fayette Flyers.

Broken Prop Award:

This month a Crasher award was given to Ernie Schlumberger for an Electric PT 19 crash, fresh in everyone’s memory (happened 45 seconds prior the meeting’s start). The wing departed the fuselage in an attempted rolling circle at center stage in front of the whole crowd.[Ahh Ernie has had alot more spectacular flights and crashes than that one.]

FROM Tom Huckaby VP-  JOE NOLL

Pee Wee Maddox and I drove up to the 2001 (19th edition) of the Joe Noll Giant scale Fly- ln,hosted byMr.PatHarness, classic southern gentleman, and owner of the property near Woodruff S.C.We arrived on Tuesday and left around noon Thursday due to previous family commitments. Mr. Pat reminded us at first pilot,'s meeting( I know, You are saying@al was Tom doing at the pilots meeting") that the Joe Nail theme has always been FUN, FELLOWSHIP and HOSPITALITY. What a great way to run an event such as this or an individual Flying Club for that mailer He told us in the Thursday pilot's meeting that there were over 500 pilots registered and that he believed this to be the largest Fly In of its type in the world. There were all types of planes there but most were of the Cap/Edge/ Extra tvpe with large 3-W and the like Gas engines, Many planes used large glow 4-strokers with a few two stroke glow engines. We saw David Parr fly his BIGGGG plane and he did us proud. Mr. Hartness made a lake on the property and there were mora water birds this year than last year which was the first year at the new site. One of the more impressive ones was a scale twin powered by TWO G-45's. It made several successful flights but on a take-off from the grass strip one engine failed and despite a great effort by the pilot the plane crashed in the wooded area across from the runway suffering moderate to heavy damage. In spite of there being between 2 to 7 large, quick planes in the air at the same time there were no mid-airs prior to the time we left on Thursday. In past years if you got to fly twice in the same day you were fortunate. This year not as many pilots signed up on the flight lists as they had done in the past so there were not many called to fly. They then announced that any one who wanted to fly should bring their plane up to the flight line and get the frequency pin and "Have at if This is exactly what we did. We must have flown 4-5 times each day. We had a ball! This is THE place to go to see BIG , PRETTY, and UNUSAL airplanes. It is a well run event and the host club, THE CONFEDERATE AIR FARCE goes out of their way to be sure you have a good time. As you may have noticed, We did not get in a major traffic condition and drive about 80 miles( But I am not going to say any thing about that) to get around it and back on coarse, We just went, flew a bunch and came home.

It was great Huck
