PRESIDENT’S CORNER - Tommy Vinci

The time on the calendar said it was time for our annual pilgrimage to TOLEDO! Bill Divins, Tom Huckaby, Pee Wee, and Ernie Schlumberger and myself made the yearly pilgrimage. First we flew in to Dayton Ohio and toured the museum at Wright Patterson, it was great, many new additions since the last time I was there (last year), everyone who is able needs to see this. Ernie and I found out just how "senior" the others in our group were by listening to the stories that were told of seeing some of the airplanes at the local airfield when they were kids! After the tour we headed on up I-75 to Toledo and had a great time. I’m sure Ernie is already planning the trip next year and this time Clare is going! Maybe Randy can swing a "kitchen pass" next year! [hmmmm when is it? I’ll start working on it now.]

I finally got the SPITFIRE ready for flight after several trips trying to get the balance right and the cooling perfected on the engine. I must admit I was nervous after all the work I put into this project. On taxing out to the runway, the left wheel and axle decided they don’t want to go! Yes they departed the airplane, embarrassing I must admit. [yuk, yuk, yuk get on with the story!] Okay, we get that fixed and fire her up again. [OH… you mean the plane] This time she taxis like a dream, from one end of the runway to the other. [good place to start] I line her up on the runway, take a deep breath and ease the throttle up.[I’m getting excited now!] She tracks straight and true, lifts off and still looks great (for about 10 seconds) then I realize I have a major problem ………. tail heavy still. [OHHH. You Meant the plane again.] I’m in "deep deer pucky" to say the very least. I was very lucky and [sorta] crashed at the end of the runway with only damage to the gear struts. [and an ego just shy of Huckaby’s]. Bill Divins called the manufacture[YELLOW] to order the gear parts and they told him that they "now" balance the model an inch further ahead than the plans called for! I assure you the next flight she will be "NOSE HEAVY!!!!! [Really a Pretty airplane Nice Job Tommy]

Got to go, working on several projects, both here and at work! [Just how many pencils can you stick in the ceiling tiles?] -The Prez

Meeting Minutes: April 27, 2000

Officer Reports:

President, Tommy Vinci brought the meeting to order at 7:40p.m. at the first meeting of the year being held at the field. There were 22 members and 5 applicants in attendance.

Treasurer, Dave Zeigler went over the financial report. For April, the club had $1640.19 in expenses, $510.00 in receipts from memberships, which leaves $9477.83 balance of all accounts. This month’s expenses included $1313.55 for gravel. Thanks to Charles Perkins and David Miles who provided labor free of charge for grading and spreading the gravel from the gate to the parking lot.

Dave then gave out a flyer for the Kid’s Spring Fling 2000 event on Saturday, June 3. There will be cash prizes for 1st through 3rd place, and special prizes awarded for Best Flight, Best Craftsmanship and Prettiest Plane. Contest details, flyers and kits available from Dave Zeigler 770-460-0939 or The Hobby Stop 770-487-0271.

Dave then talked about the Science Olympiad State Competition on April 1st. The middle and high schools took 1st place again this year. The best flight was 3:35, which surpassed last years best by about a minute. [Great Job Dave!]

New Business:

Vice President, Randy Hawkins, talked about the AMA Sanctioned Electric Sailplane Contest on May 20 and May 21st. The field will be closed to all other flying and on Friday, May 19, will be a practice day. The field will be open to all, but priority will be given to contestants, some will be traveling from different parts of the country. He also invited all present to stay and be a part of the First Night Fly of the year which was to take place after the meeting.

President, Tommy Vinci, talked about the Spring Fun Fly on Saturday, May 28th. The club will provide the "Meat" [Yeah Charles and David hint hint hint] and Drinks, and members are asked to bring a covered dish or desert and serving utensils. We will have a Swap Shop; in addition, we will have some fun events like Combat, Spot Landings and others. Candy drop for the kids.

Tommy asked if there were any objections to adding 2 more sections to the shed. None were made. [Duh] Also a motion was made to carry out the suggestion to give a $1000 donation to the WinShape Homes instead of buying golf passes to the Chick-fil-A Golf Tournament. The proceeds from the golf tournament go to the WinShape Homes also. Motion was voted on and passed.

Also, there was a yellow EXTRA 300 with a 60-size engine found in the swamp area. If it is yours, contact Earl Robinson or Tommy Vinci. [the snake living inside is getting hungry]

Broken Prop Award:

No nominations this month, [WHAT NO Shredded Balsa causing havoc with the local termite population?] but we did have an honorable mention: Tom Whitehead for his Robinhood with lights for the Night Fly, which crashed on takeoff the day before. [All fixed and ready to fly again] A voice from the crowd good-naturedly said, "That doesn’t qualify for a broken prop award cause he does that all the time". [ WAS not ME who said it!]

New Members:

This month, we had 5 new members: Michael Maxwell, Matt Bruun, Michael Mesko, John Collins and Bud Adams. Please welcome them to the club and help to get them get up and flying. [run! run! take up model railroads]

Lighting Up the Night Sky! - By Clare Schlumberger official Cloud Chaser

What a spectacular show of Lights! The club hosted its first Night Fly of the year after the meeting on April 27th. Five planes in all illuminated the night sky and wowed the audience. You could hear the buzz among the group as each plane took to the sky. [that buzz was the mosquitoes] Ernie Schlumberger lit up his secret project for the night, the Elipstik (an elliptical shaped flying wing designed by Tom Hunt of Model Air Tech) which had about 25 lights and flies like a park flyer. This one drew a lot of attention before it even flew just because of the nature of the design. nfelipsestik.jpg (9874 bytes) He also flew the transparent blue and pearl PT Electric that carries about 80-85 lights. Randy Hawkins brought out his Spectra, a.k.a. "Chandelier Class" Night Flyer which was so dubbed by someone who was duly impressed with a night flying demonstration of that plane at the last KRC meet to be held in Pennsylvania. Randy also brought the Wingo, which always draws as much attention as any of the bigger planes. It carries about 15 lights, and it can be flown in very close proximity like the slow flyers.lingo2000.jpg A great surprise was the addition of another flyer to the event, Jaye Tomlinson. Last fall, he got to Night fly the Wingo for the first time. These events are meant not only to show off the lights, but also to show everyone how easy and creative the Night Flying event can be. In addition, Jaye proved that. This year, he put lights on and flew his own Avistar at the Night Fly. Way to go, Jaye! jlights2000.jpg There maybe many, especially those new to the club who may think that Night Flying is a regular event at all clubs. However, this is not true! We are very fortunate to be able to enjoy this event right at our field. If you would like to try your hand at the next scheduled Night Fly, feel free to ask Ernie, Randy, Tommy Vinci, Bill Divins and now Jaye about what you would need. Start Now, and Be Creative. It’s easier than you may think!
