Well, if you havent made up your Christmas list for the wife (and now husbands!) you had better hurry! Mine knows all she has to do is ask Bill Divins and he can give her plenty of suggestions. The club has had a banner year in 1998, membership has surpassed 100 families with more joining each month.
Dont forget that the Christmas dinner date has been changed to Sunday December 6th! This event is catered and there is a cover charge of $10.00 per person. Plans are to eat between 6:00pm and 6:30pm, so plan your arrival so you arent last in line! If you care to join in the gift giving, bring a gift and label it male...female...or either. This is always a hoot!
Dont forget to get you renewal application and check to Dave Zeigler ASAP with your check and we will see you at the next meeting (if you dont make the Christmas Dinner!).

Toys for Tots Fun Fly
by Ernie SchlumbergerIt sure is nice when a plan comes together like with the Senior Telemaster size foam target planes that Randy Hawkins and I built for the Toys for Tots Fun Fly. (My wife-Clare-helped too.) It seems like only yesterday that Randy came to me with the idea of building target drones to shoot at with paint ball guns. We started in mid -October putting the first one together so that we could test fly and get the bugs out before we went into mass production. I enjoyed building them more than any other plane Ive built. It was a lot of fun to work with someone else to compare ideas and workmanship.
Everything came together in the last week before the Toys for Tots Fun Fly despite a few setbacks due to the old cold/flu bug flying around. We finally got to test fly the last three planes on the Friday before the Fun Fly. With the 15-20 mile/hour winds and the light drizzle, it made it kind of hard to do the trim flights. We finished up the trim flights and then worked on the field. Randy and I extended the fence the entire length of the runway and placed another rope 10 feet back from the old rope to represent the area in which to set up "camp". This provided much more room for airplanes in the pits and more of a buffer area between the planes and spectators. Several members mentioned how much they liked it at the Fun Fly. [It's going permanent]
The weather turned out to be great, though a little chilly in the morning. The 8-10 mile/hour winds were a little easier to handle with the target planes than the day before. We started a little after 10 a.m. and went nonstop until we ran out of CO2 for the paint ball guns in mid-afternoon. Despite the best efforts of the shooters, none of the planes were shot down, or sustained major damage other than holes in the foam, which can easily be patched up. One plane did have the spinner cap shot off. We raised $137.00 for Toys for Tots on the paint ball range. We also raised another $35.00 on the silent auction of the 5th target plane which was fully built and ready to cover. Charles Perkins is now the proud owner of this Senior Telemaster size foam plane.
All in all, it was definitely worth the time and effort that went into this project and I would do it again in a heartbeat. OK Randy, whats next? [Biplane Sr. Foamy or maybe a low winger]
